Cecil Kennedy, British 1905-1997 - Still life with irises; oil on canvas, signed lower right 'Cecil Kennedy', 63 x 76 cm (ARR) Provenance: R.A.F. Johnstone (according to the James Bourlet & Sons, London label attached to the reverse, ref. no.29238); private collection Note: Cecil Kennedy rose to prominence in the 1950s, celebrated for his hyperreal still life compositions, based on the floral arrangements of his wife. His work was inspired by his experiences in Antwerp during the Second World War, where he experienced first-hand the great Dutch and Flemish still life tradition. He exhibited widely during his lifetime and his paintings were collected by numerous important society patrons, most notably Queen Mary, the wife of the late King George V. His works are in public collections including Victoria Art Gallery, Bath, Dover Collections and Touchstones Rochdale.
