Celia Paul, British b.1959 - Untitled (figure), 1985; charcoal on irregular shaped buff sheet, signed and dated in pencil, 55.9 x 50 cm, (ARR) (VAT charged on hammer price) Provenance: with Bernard Jacobson Gallery according to the label attached to the reverse of the frame. Note: This drawing is a classic example of the intimate and highly personal images for which Celia Paul is famous. Her powerful portraits have been compared to those by Gwen John, and have been exhibited alongside artists including Francis Bacon and Lucien Freud (the latter of whom Paul was in a relationship with for many years) in an exhibition at the Tate Britain.
