Central Asian Bronze Ring-Handled Knife

Central Asia, ca. late 2nd to early 1st millennium BCE. A small cast-bronze knife with one edge curved and sharpened, the other unsharpened and slightly wider. One end has a small ring handle, cast as a single piece with the blade. The production of bronze weapons in Central Asia - which encompasses an enormous geographical swath from Mongolia to the Caspian Sea - began to intensify around 2000 BCE. Knives like this example have been found in the graves of warriors alongside spearpoints, arrowheads, and axes; this example has a lovely dark-brown patina across all surfaces that has developed over the ages. Size: 5.75" L (14.6 cm).
