Erwin Frey (American, 1892-1967) was born in Lima, Ohio and was an educator at Columbus Art School and the The Ohio State University from 1923 to 1961. Some notable works include the 1930 William Oxley Thompson sculpture at The Ohio State University and the George Armstrong Custer statue in New Rumley, Ohio, Custer’s birthplace. This unsigned piece was originally acquired from Erwin Frey’s widow as part of his estate.
