Ceramic plate - Eliezer Halvani. signed.
A painted and glazed Passover plate made by Eliezer Halivny, signed on the back: "Ramat Yochanan, A. Halivny, Halivny".
Passover inscription in the center, around flocks of sheep, girls riding donkeys and girls holding hay.
Diameter: 39.5 cm. On the back side are holes for hanging.
Information about the artist:
Halbani was born in Turka in Galicia to a Hasidic family. Immigrated to Eretz Israel in 1920 as part of the Hashomer Hatzair movement, joined Beit Alfa's training core, whose members were engaged in infrastructure work such as road construction. The Albanian was injured while blasting rocks for the purpose of laying a water line to Kibbutz Geva, and became blind in his left eye.
Life in the Jezreel Valley exposed the Livni to the lifestyle and culture of the Arabs and Bedouins. At the same time he was deeply influenced by the discovery of the ancient mosaics in the synagogue in Beit Alpha which was excavated in 1929. These sources of inspiration, together with the European cultural heritage, influenced his future work.
In the late 1920's and early 1930's he drew satirical paintings and illustrated cartoons about kibbutz life as part of the kibbutz wall bulletin "Barash". Some of his works are preserved in the Beit Alfa archive.
In 1940, there was a split in Beit Alfa following a crisis between Mapai members and Hashomer Ha'Tsa'ir members, as part of this split an exchange of friends was held with Kibbutz Ramat Yochanan. The Levite was among those who moved to Ramat Yochanan, which was his home for the rest of his life. In Ramat Yochanan, he first engaged in the design of Passover decorations and the Passover Haggadah of the kibbutz. The exhibition of decorations for Israeli holidays was shown in Tel Aviv[1], and his paintings were shown in an exhibition at the Haifa Museum of Art[2].
Eliezer Halvani, Jerusalem, detail from the ceramic paintings in the dining room of Ramat Yochanan
The Albanian studied painting and ceramics in France. Later he specialized in sculpture and artistic design of ceramic vessels. He created vessels such as goblets, pitchers, mugs and bowls decorated by hand with Land of Israel motifs: Arab horsemen, Yemeni immigrants, farmers at work, and the like. Habani was involved in all the stages of creating the vessels, starting with the preparation of the raw material, the design of the vessel, its painting and decoration, and ending with the firing of the ceramic vessel in the oven. The Livni used to sign the vessels "A. The Livni Ramat Yochanan Yisrael". Tools with his signature are in many collections and galleries and are sold at auctions.
