Archive
A small collection of four Château Mouton Rothschild harvest wine labels, each boldly signed by the artist who designed them, including: Marc Chagall, Salvador Dali, Henry Moore, and Richard Lippold. Only one of the artist-signed labels is dated: the Lippold on August 9, 1977; otherwise the signatures date from ca. 1958-1970. N.p. Each of the French-language labels displays the individual artist design at top. Three of the labels is a sample copy, either marked or blind-embossed "Specimen" at upper left. Near fine. The wine labels range in size from 4" x 5.25" at smallest (Dali); to 4.325" x 6.325" at the largest (Chagall). Provenance: Each label comes with a numbered and embossed Certificate of Authenticity from autograph expert Herman Davick.
The group includes:
1. A wine label signed by French-Russian artist Marc Chagall (1887-1985), as "Marc Chagall" at center. 4.325" x 6.325".
2. A wine label signed by Spanish Surrealist artist Salvador Dali (1904-1989), as "Dali" near upper right. Marked "Specimen." 4" x 5.25".
3. A wine label signed by British artist Henry Moore (1898-1986), as "Henry Moore" near upper right. Blind-embossed "Specimen."
4. A wine label signed and inscribed by American sculptor Richard Lippold (1915-2002) as "Richard Lippold / 8-9-77" at upper right. Blind-embossed "Specimen."
The vineyard at Château Mouton Rothschild is located in Pauillac, about 55km northwest of Bordeaux, France. It was acquired (and renamed) by French financier Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild in 1853. The winery, which was granted the prestigious Premier Cru Classé distinction in 1973, is still in operation today. The Château Mouton Rothschild invited some of the world's most celebrated modern artists to design its wine labels, first in 1924, and later between 1945 and 2020. Artists who have designed Château Mouton Rothschild wine labels include the ones featured here, as well as Pablo Picasso, Joan Miro, Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Georges Braque, Lucian Freud, Francis Bacon, Jeff Koons, Robert Motherwell, Jean Cocteau, and Wassily Kandinsky, to name a few!
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
