Chaim Gross (American, 1902–1991), Mother and Children, 112.5/150, 1969 Lithograph
Chaim Gross was a major American modernist sculptor and printmaker best known for direct carving in wood and for compact figure groups centered on acrobats, dancers, and family life. Born in Galicia, he immigrated to New York in 1921 and studied at the Educational Alliance, the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design, and the Art Students League. The same interlocking bodies and shifting balance found in his sculpture carry into his drawings and lithographs.
