Chancay Cotton Textile Fragments w/ Birds

[ translate ]

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A fascinating pair of cotton textiles that are fragments from a larger panel, comprised of tight tabby / plain weaving with a busy geometric bird motif painted on both. The pattern is repeating, created by variations of shifting hues in a brown pigment on the naturally beige and cream ground, which is very reminiscent of M. C. Escher's work. The interlocking birds are mesmerizing and painted onto the cloth, rather than woven in, likely using only one brown dye with various intensity to achieve the color gradient! The pieces are professionally displayed in a protective glass frame. Size (longest fragment): 20.25" L x 10.25" W (51.4 cm x 26 cm); (frame): 26" L x 23.25" W (66 cm x 59.1 cm)

Provenance: private Newport Beach, California, USA collection, before 2000

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
