LOT 0223

Chancay Female Cuchimilco Figure, Conical Cap

[ translate ]

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chancay, ca. 1000–1470 CE. A mold-made cuchimilco figure standing with both arms lifted and outspread, palms turned forward. The figure is painted in the Chancay bichrome palette, with grayish-brown pigment over a cream slip, and a tall conical cap crowned by a zigzag band, with modeled ears, almond eyes, and a closed mouth. The rounded torso carries delineated nipples and a painted pubic triangle indicating a female figure; as the piece was mold-made rather than incised, the genital marking is rendered in paint rather than carved relief. Short columnar legs end in blocky feet with incised toes. Figures of this type, sometimes referred to in the trade as "bishop" figures for their pointed headgear (though this is not a traditional or accurate designation), were placed in burials in quantity as part of Chancay funerary practice. Size: 9.5" W x 16.5" H x 5" D (24.1 cm W x 41.9 cm H x 12.7 cm D).

Provenance: private Saint Louis, Missouri, USA collection acquired between 1970 and 1995
