Chancay Pottery Cuchimilco / Star Gazer

[ translate ]

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay culture, ca. 1000 CE. A charming Chancay stargazer or cuchimilco, a human figure - this one with female characteristics - posed with arms outstretched and the large head raised. The Chancay people were exquisite ceramic and textile artisans, and archaeologists have often found cuchimilcos in the tombs of Chancay nobility. Chancay artisans created ceramics that are quite distinctive in form and decoration: hollow-body figures painted in dark brown-black on white. Some scholars believe that they were placed in tombs as companions or guardians of the deceased. Size: 7.5" W x 11" H (19 cm x 27.9 cm)
