Chancay Pottery Standing Female Cuchimilco Figure

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A hollow-built pottery female figure known as a cuchimilco, or "stargazer." The woman presents nude while standing upon broad feet and attenuated legs while holding both arms out at her sides. The cream-painted figure is adorned with black pigment along her knees, pubis, hands, and toes, and additional black areas create her headband, coffee-bean eyes, and mouth tattooing. Size: 6.1" W x 8.8" H (15.5 cm x 22.4 cm)
Provenance: ex-private Sarasota, Florida, USA collection, acquired before 1965
