Chancay Textile Panel Fragment: Abstract Serpent

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A large textile panel fragment formed from tightly-woven camelid (alpaca or llama wool) fibers in hues of wheat, aged gold, fuchsia, and black. The panel depicts an abstract serpent of an enormous form coiling around the composition with loose weaving on the body to indicate scales as well as pink-hued spikes along both peripheries. Along the righthand side are additional snakes of a minimalist presentation. Mounted atop a fabric-lined panel inside a display frame. Size (textile): 18.5" W x 13.1" H (47 cm x 33.3 cm); size (display frame): 25" W x 21.25" H (63.5 cm x 54 cm).

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s

Condition Report: This is a fragment of a larger woven textile panel. Loosening and losses to some interior and peripheral threads, with fading and staining to original pigmentation, and light creasing. Iconography is still visible.
