\Artist: Charles Claire ( 1860 - 1930)
Technique: Oil on canvas\Signature: Hand signed\Dimensions: 87_73_6_cm
Artist Charles Claire Title. Arbres en automne au bord d'un étang French School Circa 1890 Acquired from a French collection. Dimensions Overall including frame 87 cm x 73 cm x 6 cm and the painting canvas showing from aperture is 65 cm x 51. 5 cm Claire was born March 1860 in Mars- sur Allier and died 1930 in France. Claire was a painter of animals, local figures and landscapes with animals and/or figures. He was also a successful engraver. Much of Claire's work around landscape painting was highly influenced by the Barbizon movement. He was a regular exhibitor at the Salon des Artists Francais and he became a full member in 1913. It was in depicting pastoral landscapes with shepherds or shepherdesses and their flocks that he was most at home. He also painted river scenes, rural landscapes and possessed a great aptitude to capture people in their daily work Typical titles of his work include “Sheep returning to the Fold” (oil on canvas) , “Interior of Sheep barn” and “Working the Fields” (both oil on canvas) and his work is extremely sought after by private collectors. Claires work usually attract good amounts at auction and at gallery sales in the region of 2-3,000 euros plus as research will demonstrate. There are a pair of landscapes ( one very similar in some features) for sale on 1s* Di*s at present for £13,750 . Condition report. We are describing the painting as in fair to good condition for it's antiquity. There are no obvious repairs, but there is a little bit of impasto in two small areas ( not noticeable to normal viewing) and indicative of the artists technic and one use of a thin impasto touch-in ( tiny area also on the verso which suggests a microscopic wear to the thinning canvas. The painting has a few areas of thinning to canvas ( No daylight showing yet) and the painting would benefit from a lining at some point in the next decade. Also the painting would ideally benefit from a professional cleaning to enhance it's wonderful tonality and use of colour. Fully acceptable hung in it's present condition and is being offered for auction with a coeval gilt-coloured turn of the Century composition French frame which is in reasonably good condition and offered as a gift as we cannot insure frames for shipping.
