Charles Courtney Curran (American, 1861-1942)

Picnic Supper on the Sand Dunes
Signed, dated, and titled "CHAS.C.CURRAN 1890/PICNIC SUPPER ON/THE SAND DUNES" lower right.
Oil on canvas, 12 x 19 3/4 in. (30.5 x 50.5 cm), framed.
Condition: Lined, minor retouch, fine craquelure.

N.B. From 1888 to 1890, Curran studied at the Académie Julian in Paris. His exposure to French Impressionism there is evident in the bright palette and loose brushwork he employed in this 1890 painting. While in Paris, Curran executed small plein air compositions that often featured women and children enjoying daily life in the city's parks. This larger work completed at the end of Curran's time abroad suggests the culmination of his Paris experience and foretells the Impressionist scenes of figures in nature for which Curran's later work is celebrated.
Estimate $50,000-70,000

The lining is adhered with glue or resin. The retouch is minor, primarily dots and dashes to the sky and some extremely fine lines of craquelure within the figures. Framed dimensions are 20 x 27 1/2 x 2 3/8 inches.

Items may have wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging. Any condition statement given, as a courtesy to a client, is only an opinion and should not be treated as a statement of fact. Skinner shall have no responsibility for any error or omission.
