"The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club", Complete in 1 Volume, by Charles Dickens, with Fifty-Seven illustrations by Phiz; The Household Edition published by Chapman & Hall, 193 Piccadilly, London, No Date, the inscription on the front endpaper is dated 1874.

Most notably, the Chapman and Hall were original publishers for Charles Dickens (from 1840 until 1844 and again from 1858 until 1870). Chapman and Hall vacated their offices at 186 Strand and moved to 193 Piccadilly in 1852.

Hablot Knight Browne (1815-1882) was an English artist and illustrator. Well-known by his pen name, Phiz, he illustrated books by Charles Dickens, Charles Lever, and Harrison Ainsworth.

Provenance:

Ashby Bland Crowder, Richmond, Va. [1941-2019], Professor of English, American Literature, and the Humanities. He was a respected scholar on Victorian literature, published books on Browning, novelist William Humphrey, and poet Seamus Heaney. His edition of the poetry of John Crowe Ransom was published in 2019. He also contributed to many scholarly journals.The ex-libris of A. Bland Crowder inside cover.
