Charles "Doc" Winner (American, 1885-1956) If George Could See Us Now, Pittsburgh Post newspaper cartoon, 1916 India ink on heavyweight paper laid on board 18 x 15 inches (45.7 x 38.1 cm) (image) Signed lower left: Winner This splendid original editorial cartoon features George Washington and Uncle Sam and humorously illustrates the amazing growth of the United States of America since its founding in 1789. Uncle Sam looks benevolently upon "the Father of His Country," for by 1916 the USA was the leader in "the world's business" and "first in peace" as Europe sunk deeper into World War I. "Wilson Tarriff Benefits" at right gives a nod to the Underwood-Simmons Tariff Act of 1913 which was backed by President Wilson and reduced rates dramatically. Doc Winner began his career in newspaper comics and illustration at the Pittsburgh Post as editorial cartoonist and successor to Billy DeBeck in drawing sports cartoons. In 1918 he joined the art staff of King Features Syndicate and for the next 38 years wrote and drew comic strips. His work included the panel cartoons Tubby (1923-1926), Elmer (1926-1956), Thimble Theatre (1938-1939), Barney Google and Snuffy Smith (mid-1940s) and The Katzenjammer Kids (1949-1956).
