Charles Eames - Herman Miller - Armchair - EA117
The chairs produced by the Aluminium Group are the most famous projects of Charles and Ray Eames. Designed in 1958, they are milestones in the history of 20th century design.
. An important aspect of the Aluminium Chair is the clever combination of materials. Its form is clean and transparent, the structure is clearly visible. The aluminium sides offer the seat stability and lightness at the same time. The upholstery has been fixed to the sides and stretched, in order to adapt it to the structure and ensure great comfort despite the lack of voluminous padding. The upholstery is not a shell but a part of the structure.
. Materials:
. The leather upholstery always features a level back.
- Mechanics: adjustable tilting backrest, which can be locked in the front position; adjustable seat height, chair equipped with gas lift cylinder.
- Backrest and seat: leather coated components, high-frequency welded. Sides and shaft in polished die-cast aluminium
. This specimen is the second from my private collection consisting of two EA 117.
. Made in California by Herman Miller in 1958, purchased by my father in 1961, impeccably preserved, the leather is still soft and flawless, as shown in the photos; rarely used, it does not look as if it is nearly 60 years old.
