The piece has tones of Max Beckman with its expressionist style, as well as its subject matter. While not much is known about the inspiration of the piece, it was first exhibited at the Faculty Art Show at WashU. In fact, the painting was also painted in the studios there while he was an instructor. It has also been exhibited at Mint Museum in Charlotte (1979) and the Gerald Melberg Gallery in Charlotte (1984).
Quest was an avid artist who truly believed in gaining inspiration from the Old Masters- he and his wife would spend lots of time at the City Art Museum (SLAM) just studying the paintings there. His work would go on to become part of great collections all over the country including the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, Georgetown University, Crystal Bridges Museum, and in MoMA.
