Charles Gibbs, British fl.1878-1899- On the Hill, Bristol; oil on canvas, signed and dated ‘C. Gibbs / 1892’ (lower right), and indistinctly signed and inscribed 'Charles Gibbs / Falkland Rd Dorking / No 2 On the Hill Bristol' on an old label (now partially lost) attached to the upper horizontal stretcher bar, 76.6 x 60 cm. Provenance: Anon. sale, Christie’s, London, 14 June 1991, lot 314 (£2,800). Note: Gibbs was best-known for his paintings of the British countryside, often depicting wooded settings populated by cattle and sheep. The present work is a classic example of Gibbs’ peaceful, romantic scenes, undisturbed by human presence. His depiction of the bare branches and forest floor carpeted in amber leaves is powerfully evocative of the coming of autumn.
