Charles Haigh-Wood, British, 1856-1927, Full Length Portrait of a Lady (Mrs. Escombe, wife of Captain Escombe), O/C, numerous labels verso. _x000D_
Note: Subject identified via a paper tag, possibly the spouse of Captain W. M. L. Escombe, 20 Battalion, London Regiment. Captain Escombe (1891-1973) joined the Territorial Force in 1911 and then served throughout the duration of the First World War. He was Mentioned in Despatches and awarded the DSO in 1915. He was appointed CBE in 1960. Haigh-Wood studied at Manchester School of Art and at the Royal Academy of Arts. He was a respected painter of portraits and genre works, having 42 paintings exhibited at the Royal Academy during his lifetime, but is equally known as the father-in-law of T. S. Eliot._x000D_
Provenance: This painting was part of the private collection of Sir Richard Giordano, Chairman of Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and Chairman of Oxara Energy Group Ltd. Giordano was appointed Honorary Knight Commander of the British Empire in 1989 for his services to British Industry. In 2002, he was appointed an additional Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
