Charles Kuhn (American, 1892-1989) There Are Some Fishermen Like That and Reluctant as I Am, Indianapolis News newspaper cartoons (two works), 1944 India ink on heavyweight paper 14 x 12 inches (35.6 x 30.5 cm) (image) Each signed and dated lower right: Chas Kuhn -44 Charles Kuhn addresses President Franklin D. Roosevelt's clear desire and intention to win an unprecedented fourth term in office in two original editorial cartoons published in the Indianapolis News in 1944. FDR was an avid fisherman, and in There Are Some Fishermen Like That he is just that: with three terms already in the bag, he has his line in the water for a fourth as the American voter, portrayed as a game warden, looks on. Reluctant As I Am shows the President sprinting to the White House and that fourth term. The title plays sarcastically on FDR's disingenuous public position that he did not seek the fourth term but accepted his party's nomination and campaigned vigorously because the nation called to him. Charles Kuhn enrolled in the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts and studied under Frank King, working at a variety of odd jobs before he landed work with the Rocky Mountain News (1919-1921). He signed on with the Indianapolis News in 1922 and remained with that newspaper for the next 26 years. At age 55 he started his Grandma comic strip which was distributed nationally by King Features Syndicate from 1948 to 1969.
