[ translate ]

\Artist: Charles Rochussen (1814-1894)
Technique: Oil on panel\Signature: Hand signed\Dimensions: 39_48_5_cm
Beautiful work which gives an image about the making of a defensive stronghold during, e. g. , the 80 year war. A temporary fortification with cannons helped to keep the enemy at bay. The history painter Rochussen made many scenes from that period and was a welcome guest at the Loo palace in Apeldoorn where King Willem 3 received many artists and gave commissions. The work has a beautiful Prince/Flippo frame. Charles Rochussen came from a wealthy family. He was a son of the soap and salt manufacturer Henry Rochussen, a collector of art and antiquities, and Judith Bethlemine Charlotte Hubert. His brother Henri (1812-1889) also became a painter and draughtsman. Charles left Rotterdam at the age of 22. In 1836 he went to The Hague to learn the painters trade, despite the fact that a career in commerce had initially been planned for him. Rochussen was educated at the Academy in the Hague. His earliest painting originated in the studio of his teacher Nuijen, ca. 1837-38, where he was only briefly taught by this teacher due to his early death. Along with Nuijen's other pupil Charles Leickert, he was a skid-bearer at the funeral of his young deceased teacher. He found a second teacher in Nuijen's friend Waldorp. [1]
