¶ The monumental Roman history written by Charles Rollin (1661-1741) , entitled "Roman History from the Foundation of Rome to the Battle of Actium" remains a major work of French historiography of the 18th century. Rollinus, who was a renowned scholar and educator, wrote this book with the aim of providing students with a clear and comprehensive presentation of the history of Rome, from its legendary founding in 753 BC. BC until the Battle of Actium in 31 BC. BC, which saw the victory of Octavian, future emperor Augustus, over Mark Antony and Cleopatra. Rollin relied on numerous ancient and modern sources to write his work, which he organized into six books, each divided into several chapters.

The interest of Rollin's work lies in its both synthetic and detailed presentation of the history of Rome, which makes it a valuable tool for students and researchers in ancient history. Rollin knew how to make his story lively and accessible, while respecting the requirements of scientific rigor. It was thus able to shed light on the most important political, military and cultural events in the history of Rome, while offering an in-depth analysis of the causes and consequences of these events. In addition, Rollin was able to identify trends and constants in the history of Rome, which allowed him to propose a global interpretation of this history, which remains valid even today.
