Charles S. Todd Kentucky Military & Politicians Letter

Single folded self cover inked Ms letter headed Near Shelbyville, Ky. 8 th Jany. 1849 with Shelbyville postmark and red wax seal addressed to Hon. Richard Hawer, Paris Kentucky, letter is mainly dealing with politics in the state with several references to Governor John J. Crittenden, Henry Clay and others. Charles Steward Todd (1791-1871) was born in Danville, Ky., attended Transylvania University, & William & Mary studying law, volunteered during the War of 1812, made Captain of Infantry and then Aide to General Wm. Henry Harrison during the battle of the Thames. Became Inspector General of Michigan Territory with rank of Colonel. In 1816 he returned to Kentucky to resume his political and diplomatic career, and married Gov. Isaac Shelbys daughter Letitia. Appointd Kentucky Secretary of State in 1817 and was a U.S. confidential agent to Columbia until 1824. From 1841-46 served as U.S. ambassador to Russia during the Zachary Taylor administration. After which he retired to his farm near Shelbyville, but remained very active in Kentucky and U.S. politics for the remainder of his life as this letter demonstrates. This letter is pressure mounted on acid free card stock and framed, 20 ¾ x 14 ¼” high.Condition Normal folds, VG+.
