Charles William Bartlett (June 1, 1860 – April 16, 1940) was an English painter and printmaker who settled in Hawaii. Bartlett studied metallurgy and worked in that field for several years. At the age of 23, he enrolled at the Royal Academy in London, where he studied painting and etching. After three years of studying in London, he went to the private studio school Académie Julian in Paris, where he studied with Jules Joseph Lefebvre (1836-1911) and Gustave Boulanger (1824-1888) . The gouache on offer shows a Zeeland scene in which the young ladies with baskets and yoke are waiting to cross with the ferry. It is a very beautiful, colourful scene, made in 1900, exactly halfway through his artistic life! The work is signed in the lower right and dated. The gouache is in good condition. Dimensions image: 53 x 44 cm. The work comes with UV-resistant museum glass, so that the colours are protected and the glass hardly mirrors. Provenance: from a private collection.
