Charming Ambrotype of School Children from Texas

Found in Texas, this late 1850s clear quarter-plate ambrotype depicts two young boys, one of whom holds a small slate tablet towards the camera. Written on this slate in chalk is: “3 4 5 6 7 8 9 Josey." Schoolhouse content is quite unusual in early photography. Image is housed in a half leatherette case.
