Chavin Bichrome Vase with Spirals

[ translate ]

Pre-Columbian, northern Peru, Chavin culture, Casa Grande type, ca. 1200 to 800 BCE. A delightfully proportioned stirrup vessel featuring a thick spout terminating in an everted rim and a near-spherical body flattened on its lower end to sit neatly on a flat surface. Incised around the body is a motif of repeated spirals, with the spirals themselves and the lower body painted earthy red and the upper body and spout painted in a warm orange-brown. Perhaps these spirals are meant to symbolize snakes or waves, or perhaps they are just meant to be visually interesting! Size: 6" W x 9.05" H (15.2 cm x 23 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, collected from the 1950s to the 1960s

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
