Chavin Pottery Stirrup Vessel Depicting Yuca Tubers

[ translate ]

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chavin, Tembladera, Jequetepeque valley, ca. 700 to 400 BCE. Wow! An incredible blackware stirrup vessel featuring a tall, V-shaped stirrup, a wide spout, and a body in the form of a yuca tubers (also known as cassava) laid on their sides, their tapering ends dwindling to gentle tips on one side of the vessel. Shallow, short incised lines create the appearance of the rough skin these plants have in real life. Their elongated bodies are wonderfully sculpted to form this minimalist vase that celebrates one of the most important Peruvian foodstuffs - all types of potatoes are native to Peru and yuca tubers (not to be confused with the flowering plant yucca) would have been central to the Chavin diet. The surface of this vessel has been stone polished to a glossy, almost silvery sheen that contributes to its beauty. Size: 7.5" W x 9.95" H (19 cm x 25.3 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, collected from the 1950s to the 1960s

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.

#152591 Dimensions: Condition Report: Expertly repaired and restored. This is so well done as to be almost indiscernible. Great deposits on surface.
