Chelaberd
mid 19th century, 197 x 132 cm, South Caucasus, Nagorny Karabagh
Two immaculately drawn sunburst medallions in light green and blue fill the light red field. The perfect division of space creates a harmonious and balanced appearance. The brilliant transparent colours and meticulous execution, down to the small details, suggest that this Karabagh was woven around 1850. The late collector purchased the rug at Galerie Eberhart Herrmann in Munich in 1993.
HERRMANN, EBERHART, Kaukasische Teppichkunst im 19. Jahrhundert. Munich 1993, no. 50
Condition
Some larger repairs in the lower starburst medallion and one repair in the upper starburst medallion. Both finishes reduced and secured with a textile band. Cut sides, selvedges replaced.
