Chelaberd
Second half 19th century, 190 x 126 cm, South West Caucasus, Karabagh region
Two huge sunburst medallions fill almost the whole of the brilliant red field. The weaver only found space to add some small decorative motifs along the sides. The white main border decorated with a red double vine connecting small star-shaped flowers is very narrow, as is often the case in Karabagh carpets presenting the Chelaberd design. – Small repaired areas, good overall condition, original finishes all around.
TABIBNIA, MOSHE, Kazak del XIX Seculo. Mailand 1995, Tf.30 *** HERRMANN, EBERHART, Kaukasische Teppichkunst im 19. Jahrhundert. Ein Bilderbuch. München 1993, Nr.50
