Chen Yifei was a Chinese painter known for his realistic portraits, landscapes, and interiors. Born on April 12, 1946 in Ningbo, China, he studied at the Shanghai College of Art, where he learned to paint in the Socialist Realist style popularized in the Soviet Union. Shortly after he graduated, Chen was painting propaganda for the Communist regime, including portraits glorifying the deeds of Mao Zedong. Surviving the dangers of the Cultural Revolution, once the government relaxed its policies Chen began paintings derived from fashion, cinema, and portraits of Westerners. Chen lived in New York from 1980 to 1990, earned an MFA from Hunter College, and found commercial success by painting historical Chinese subject matter. When Chen returned to Shanghai, he painted idyllic Tibetan and Chinese landscapes, became an entrepreneur, and directed a number of films. The artist died on April 10, 2005 in Shanghai, China.
