The illustration consists of a frontispiece portrait, an engraved title, a folded map, 3 header vignettes and 15 plates, some of which are folded -

"Jean Chardin made a first trip to Persia from 1665 to 1670.
Faced with the difficulties faced by Protestants in France, he left again in 1671, this time passing through Smyrna, Constantinople, Crimea and the Caucasus, visited Persepolis twice, went to India and returned to Europe in 1681, he published five years later this first part of his diary, devoted to the period 1671-73 -

The persecutions against Protestants forced him to settle in London where he became court jeweler and was knighted by Charles II, which explains the first publication in London then this second, expanded edition published in Amsterdam.

In Constantinople, the author became friends with the artist Claude Grelot, who accompanied him on his travels and whose drawings inspired the engravings in this volume. Endowed with a keen sense of observation, his travel stories still retain great interest today; they are an important source on Persian culture and civilization of the time" -
