Republic Peso 1867-So MS65 NGC, Santiago mint, KM141, WR-11, Elizondo-113, MC-Unl. Variety with denomination written as "1 Peso". Simply extraordinary, and a coin that invites closer examination in hand. Struck as a single-year type prior to the adoption of the "Un Peso" design employed until 1891. The quality of this current offering absolutely impresses, as most survivors of the type seldom escape the lower tiers of VF--even the Whittier example ranked as a mere AU50. Perhaps the only representative preserved in a similar state was the Millennia piece, described as a unique Specimen or Proof striking. Although this presentation may not exhibit Prooflike characteristics, its superb preservation can hardly be disputed, showcasing icy, lightly toned fields free of any evidence of serious contact. Even given the usual central weakness ubiquitous for the date, the devices are otherwise crisp and fully expressed, with just the mildest doubling discernable in the legends. On the whole, an offering that is hardly improvable and the single finest yet certified. Ex. R.L. Lissner Collection (CNG-St. James's Auction 29, August 2014, Lot 1393); Purchased from Freeman Craig in January 1984; Garcia Collection
