Chimu 15K+ Gold Sheet Repousse Faces of Gods (3)

[ translate ]

**Originally Listed At $250**

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A trio of gold sheet repousse faces of gods, two nearly identical, with a square-shaped form with cut outs at the edges and for the nostrils. The other has two downwardly curving fringes emerging from its face. All faces gaze directly toward the viewer, a convention also used to portray gods in Chimu textiles. The Spanish conquistadors were amazed by the level of skill that the people of the Andes had in goldsmithing. The remains of the workshops where artisans created these items have been excavated in Chan Chan, the Chimu capital. Delicate pieces like these were made by hammering sheets of gold around a wooden mold while the metal was heated to make it more malleable. Size of largest: 1.45" W x 1.2" H (3.7 cm x 3 cm)

Provenance: private Washington, DC, USA collection; ex-Sloans and Kenyon Auction, Maryland, USA; ex-Galleria Verges, Maryland; ex-Washington DC, USA collection; ex-Arte Primitivo, New York, USA

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
