Chimu-Inca Blackware Portrait Vessel

**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, Northern to Central Peru, Chimu-Inca culture, ca. 1200 to 1500 CE. A highly burnished blackware pottery vessel with a slightly rounded but stable base, the body representing an individual with a wide-eyed expression, a long slender nose, parted downturned lips revealing delineated teeth, and cup-shaped ears. Rising from his forehead is a tubular spout, and a generous strap handle joins neck to shoulder. A fine example of Chimu-Inca portraiture! Size: 3.875" W x 4.75" H (9.8 cm x 12.1 cm)

Provenance: private Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA collection; ex-Minerva Gallery; ex-Benjamin Vega, California, USA, acquired in 2006 to 2007; ex-Gene and Virginia George, brought to the USA from 1961 to 1966

Condition Report: Handle reattached to both terminals, with resurfacing and overpainting along break lines. Minor abrasions to body and spout, with light fading to original color, and light encrustations. Nice earthen deposits and remains of original black color throughout.
