Chimu Painted Textile Fragment - Abstract Zoomorphs

Pre-Columbian, Central/North Coast Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A gorgeous textile fragment comprised of tightly-woven natural cotton fibers with elaborate geometric and figural motifs in painted hues of salmon-pink, coffee, espresso, and sky-blue. The decorative program consists of four columns filled with abstract zoomorphic creatures resembling small primates, hedgehogs, mirrored serpents, and circular sand dollars, and the narrow columns in-between boast highly-abstract geometric 'creatures' with petite circular 'eyes.' A colorful example of fine Peruvian artistry! Sewn onto a modern beige panel atop a dark-brown, museum-quality fabric. Size (textile): 13.5" W x 12.625" H (34.3 cm x 32.1 cm); size (fabric): 29.75" W x 29.25" H (75.6 cm x 74.3 cm).
