Chimu Textile Woven Panel Fragment - Abstract Deer

**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chimu, Late Intermediate Period, ca. 1000 to 1400 CE. A beautiful textile fragment composed of tightly-woven natural fibers in hues of cream, wheat, crimson, jet black, and coral. The center panel displays a quartet of abstract deer with slender bodies, bent legs, flared tails, sinuous necks, and elongated heads with red eyes. Each zoomorphic figure boasts a large multi-lobed antler which extends from behind their heads and curves above. A pair of beige strips adorn the top and bottom of the central design, outlined in red and presenting a repeating series of abstract cyclopean fish in varying colors. A wonderful example from the ancients of Peru! Mounted inside a pair of glass panels. Size (textile): 14" W x 10" H without bottom fringe (35.6 cm x 25.4 cm); size (glass frame): 20" W x 18.25" H (50.8 cm x 46.4 cm).

Condition Report: Textile has some fading and staining to pigmentation, fraying and losses to peripheral threads, loosening to interior and peripheral threading, and some creasing in the center. Glass backing has light abrasions, and a pair of metal bars secure both halves together.
