China 1842 (J. Kearney, Drum Major. 18th R. Irish Reg. Infantry), with edge bruising and contact marks overall, otherwise very fine

John Kearney was born in 1810 in Sicily. He attested for the 18th Foot at Dublin on 28 October 1824 and saw service in the Mediterranean for over six years, followed by service in China for over seven years and finally service in the East Indies of just over two years.

He reached the rank of Drum Major on 1 September 1840, but his career nearly came to an unfortunate end when was placed 'in confinement' on 18 May 1843 and the following day was tried by Court Martial for a combination of 'losing through neglect' and 'making away with property from the Sergeant's Mess'. However, due to his previous 'unblemished service' he was not sentenced with any punishment.

Kearney was discharged as a result of being 'worn out by length of service' on 9 September 1850.
