Kweichow. Republic "Bamboo" Dollar Year 38 (1949) XF45 PCGS, KM-Y433a, L&M-612, Kann-758, Chang-CH132, Shanghai Museum-345, WS-1112, Wenchao-1064 (rarity 3 stars), Shi Jiagan Collection-314. Variety with round window on pavilion. By far the rarer of the only two Dollar-sized issues produced in the province, the so-called "Bamboo" Dollar represents one of the final types produced prior to the Communist victory in October 1949. Despite having been produced during the turbulent years of the 1940's, the execution of the design does not seem to have suffered in the least from the contemporary political climate. Though the series is known to have been shallowly engraved towards the center of the obverse, the motifs here carry a clout that is instantly perceptible, and absolutely singular amongst contemporary Chinese coinage. While light handling exists in line with the grade, this does little to deter the eye, a pleasing sunset orange-gold patina having taken to the surfaces to add an ample eye appeal. Not a type that is reasonably locatable in AU grades. Ex. R.N.J. Wright Collection
