People's Republic gold Proof "Year of the Sheep" 100000 Yuan (10 Kilo) 2015, Shenzhen mint, KM-Unl., CC-2011. 180mm. Mintage: 18. Lunar series. Rarely does a coin of such immense size and splendor come to market, marking a singular opportunity to acquire one of the largest gold issues to have ever been produced. The lunar series, to which the present offering belongs, has continued to be one of the most covetable in modern Chinese numismatics since its inception in 1981. Marking the 40th anniversary of the series, Heritage is proud to present choice lunars throughout the run's entirety, culminating in the present specimen. Struck to commemorate the Year of the Sheep/Goat, this fantastic 10-kilogram offering, approximately 22 pounds of 99.9% pure gold, features a boldly frosted depiction of an adult ram stoically poised set atop a matte, bas relief rendition of a second ram's head, all hosted by endlessly deep mirrors and Gem Proof appearances. Accompanied by a massive acrylic case proudly displaying serial number "008" along the bottom edge and sold with a corresponding COA and case of issue, the piece remains proudly doubly auspicious, as Chinese culture regards both the sheep and the number "8" as lucky symbols. Since the production of this denomination, none have been offered for auction in the United States, while a single example of this date and size was offered for auction in China in May of 2016, garnering significant interest and thus premium. When considering the rapidly growing collector interest in modern Chinese coins, especially the lunar series, we cannot anticipate the heights this piece will reach.
