Qing Dynasty. Wen Zong (Xian Feng) Pattern (Mother Coin) 1000 Cash ND (March-August 1854) AU, Board of Works mint (New Branch), cf. Already fleeting as the highest denomination within the Qing monetary system, to locate a 1000 Cash coin in this level of quality is truly a special occasion. Very likely a Pattern or Mother coin (mu qian) used to produce the sand molds from which the standard, circulation issues would be cast, this piece shows razor-sharp definition and striking reliefs throughout its designs, the surfaces additionally appearing quite original and free of tooling. Though his reign only lasted for around a decade, Xian Feng oversaw the largest production of multiple cash issues during the Qing Dynasty. While several parties at court made recommendations for the creation of even larger denominations--such as a coin denominated at 10,000 Cash--such measures were never adopted.
