[ translate ]

Origin: ChinaDimensions: Horse Print: 17 x 6 in. Broom Print: 5 x 9.25 in. Ink Stones: 3 x 4.5 in. (each)Condition: Both prints/rubbing have creases and age-related wear such as discoloration and tears. Stone objects have chipping, discoloration and scratches.Additional Description: The first item is an illustrative paper copy or rubbing-style print modeled after the Six Steeds of the Zhao Mausoleum (Zhaoling Liujun, a group of Tang dynasty stone reliefs commissioned for the mausoleum of Emperor Taizong (Li Shimin) in Shaanxi, China. The strip features repeated vertical imagery, with one image oriented upright and another inverted. The scene appears to relate to Saluzi, one of the six celebrated horses and the only relief in the group that includes a human figure. The historical relief depicts the horse Saluzi with the general Qiu Xinggong, associated with the story of the horse being wounded by an arrow during the Tang campaign around Luoyang in 621 CE. The paper example uses bold linear outlines to evoke the carved relief imagery. The second item is a traditional Chinese figure drawing depicting Shi De, the Tang dynasty Buddhist poet-monk traditionally represented holding a broom. The medium is red/brown ink on a thin, light green-toned sheet. The vertical inscription, written in stylized cursive script, is translated as “With every single thought, a single sweep,” “Master Shi De” interpreted in the supplied identification as a reference to Zen Buddhist practice and the clearing away of mental distractions and worldly illusions. The third group comprises rectangular stone objects resembling traditional Chinese inkstones and related scholar's desk implements. One has a recessed grinding surface, another has a reddish-orange substance on the surface, and the last piece features a carved decorative motif. These prints, rubbings and ink stones have not been independently dated, and the status as originals or later reproductions remains unconfirmed.
