Chinese Blanc d' Chin Porcelain Guanyin Statue
East Asia, China, late Qing to Republic era, early to mid-20th century CE. A beautiful antique / vintage statue of Guanyin in Blanc d'Chin porcelain, a creamy white with softly molded features and then extremelet delicate fingers! The detail and relief nature of her hands draws the viewer's eye to the lotus flower and then up to her face. The piece is hollow and the inside of the rim is stamped in red "CHINA."Guanyin, also known as Avalokiteshvara, is a revered bodhisattva in East Asian Buddhism, particularly in Chinese Buddhism. She embodies compassion and mercy, often depicted as a female figure with attributes such as lotus flowers and vessels for purification. Size: 3" W x 10" H (7.6 cm x 25.4 cm)
"Blanc de Chine" porcelain, sometimes spelled "Blanc d'Chin," refers to a type of Chinese white porcelain made in the Dehua kilns of Fujian province in China. This porcelain is characterized by its pure white color and translucent quality, achieved through the use of a fine-grained clay known as kaolin. Blanc de Chine porcelain has been produced since the Ming dynasty and is known for its elegant and delicate forms, often featuring Buddhist and Taoist motifs. It became highly prized both in China and in export markets, particularly in Europe, where it influenced the development of European porcelain production. From around 1890 to the 1920s, exports to the USA were required to have "CHINA" stamped or marked ont the surface, this practice continued into the later part of the 20th century as well.
