Chinese Carved Stone Bodhisattva Head, Tang
A Chinese stone Buddhist figure's head, likely a bodhisattva, dating from the Tang dynasty on a wooden stand. The head wears an ornament over their top knot that features a seated Buddha figure, possibly Amoghasiddhi or Shakyamuni Buddha.
Dimensions are: the head itself measures 7 3/4 inches tall X 3 1/2 inches wide, 19.7 cm X 8.9 cm, while the head with the stand measures 11 inches tall X 3 1/2 inches wide, 27.9 cm X 8.9 cm. All measurements are approximate.
Condition: There is loss to the top knot and ears, as well as general age wear.
Provenance: From a private collection in the Upper East Side of Manhattan in New York City. From the former Irving collection. Comes with a sticker from the Irving Collection (item 1848). The Freer Gallery of Art has a similar example in their collection, accession number FSC-S-29. A similar example was sold at Christie's London on November 3, 2008, as lot 49.
