A very detailed colorful cylindrical tea container or box with many auspicious symbols that shows expert workmanship.
A round bronze base metal container with matching lid has been covered with ornate patterns of glass enamels. The body has rondels of bats circling the shou character done in a combination of cloisonné and champlevé. These medallions are surrounded by precious objects and floral motifs. The lid has a matching rondel of the shou and bats. The base is covered with a tree peony design. The coloring is a rainbow of blues, yellows, pink, and red with black and white accents. The inside of the lid and base are coated in a pale blue enamel. The lid mouth and base mouth are not glazed and show the gold coloring of the bronze. The caddy has a nice heavy weight. It is unmarked
MEASUREMENTS
4 1/8” (10.6 cm) tall x 3 ¼” (8.3 cm) diameter. Weighs 12.4 oz (350 g)
CONDITION
The lid medallion has a hole in the shou symbol. The interior of the lid shows loss of enamel where the hole was drilled. It may have been for a finial or exposing the contents to air. The enamels are still bright. There are no breaks, dents, or enamel losses. The enamels show small pitting. The piece shows a nice oxidization of the metal.
