Chinese Export Armorial Plate, ca. 1736-1795
9" diameter
This remarkable Chinese export porcelain plate is decorated with a finely hand-painted coat of arms, attributed to a European family likely associated with the Boar Crest, a symbol of courage, resilience, and bravery in heraldic traditions. The black shield (sable) displays three boar's heads, while the crest features a boar's head in profile.
While the specific family attribution is undetermined, the armorial elements closely resemble those associated with prominent families such as the Bacon, Gordon, or Campbell families, all known for incorporating boar motifs in their heraldry.
Provenance: From the collection of Elinor Gordon. The reverse of the plate bears a label from Elinor Gordon, the esteemed dealer of Chinese export porcelain based in Villanova, PA.
Condition: Good overall, with minor surface wear commensurate with age, as well as wear to the black shield. No visible cracks or restorations.
