Chinese Gilt Bronze Medicine Buddha with Stand, Ming
A Chinese gilt bronze Medicine Buddha or Bhaishajyaguru dating from the Ming dynasty. The statue comes with a metal stand in two parts: a stylized lotus pedestal and a fenced stand with feet. Medicine Buddha himself sits in dhyanasana with his right hand holding an arura fruit and his left hand in dhyana mudra, perhaps originally holding a bowl. He wears a thick lotus-bordered robe over both shoulders and a dhoti. There is a Buddhist cross incised on his bare chest.
Dimensions are: 13 inches tall X 6 inches wide, 33 cm X 15.2 cm. Weight: 3850 grams (with stand). All measurements are approximate.
Condition: There is wear to the paint on the stand and the Buddha. Gilt wear to the Buddha. There is loss to the top of the lotus pedestal.
Provenance: From the collection of Mr. Williams in Texas. Mr. Williams has more than 50 years of collecting experience in Buddhist sculptures, paintings, and ritual objects from India, Pakistan, Nepal, Tibet, and the Central Plains of China. He has participated in sales around the world including in Hong Kong and throughout Tibet and Europe. This lot was purchased from an auction in Paris, France.
