Chinese Gilt Wood Buddha, Ming Dynasty
A Chinese gilt wood statue of historical Buddha dating from the Ming dynasty. He sits in dhyaanasana with his hands in dhyana mudra. His wavy hair is gathered into a bun without an abstracted ushnisha, and a metal urna protrudes from his forehead.
Dimensions are: 12 inches tall X 9 inches wide, 30.5 cm X 22.9 cm. All measurements are approximate.
Condition: There is severe breakage and significant areas of loss to the wood and gilt. There is separation of the wood at the bottom.
Provenance: From the collection of Mr. Williams in Texas. Mr. Williams has more than 50 years of collecting experience in Buddhist sculptures, paintings, and ritual objects from India, Pakistan, Nepal, Tibet, and the Central Plains of China. He has participated in sales around the world including in Hong Kong and throughout Tibet and Europe.
