Chinese Han Dynasty Style Pottery Dog Figures LOT
Estate lot of two Chinese Han Dynasty pottery funerary dog figures (mingqi), comprising molded terracotta canine sculptures dating to the Han Dynasty, circa 206 BCE-220 CE. One figure depicts a compact standing dog with stylized features, while the other portrays a more naturalistic dog with pointed ears, elongated body, and raised tail. Accompanied by provenance documentation, including a BidAncient certificate of authenticity for the larger example and an Artemis Gallery certificate of authenticity with packing list for the smaller example. Approximate measurements: larger figure 6.5 x 11 x 3.5 in.; smaller figure 5.5 x 7.5 x 2.5 in.
Condition: Good overall condition with typical age-related surface wear, encrustation, chips, abrasions, and losses consistent with age and burial. Both figures have vent holes on the underside typical of hollow-molded pottery construction. The larger figure bears black ink inventory markings on the underside of one foot. The smaller figure exhibits an apparent firing-related hairline and minor surface chips, as noted in the accompanying Artemis Gallery documentation. Note: This condition statement is provided as a courtesy and reflects an opinion, not a statement of fact. Bidders are encouraged to inspect items in person or through an agent to assess condition. Estate fresh to the market.
