Chinese Handscroll Attributed to Four Tangs, Ming

明代 仿唐宋四家書畫手捲 A Chinese handscroll with a jade toggle and stone dowels. All elements are mounted on a silk backing. A series of 4 landscape paintings in ink and watercolor on silk, 5 calligraphy sections, and 4 descriptions of the paintings. There are 49 seals in total.

Dimensions are: 12 inches tall X 34 feet wide. All measurements are approximate.

Condition: Significant age wear, and some areas of restoration.

Provenance: From Dr. Kuo in Chicago, by descent from his father-in-law (Shen Zhongtao, 1892-1980), writer of the "Hua Ying Yi Jing" and "Yi Gua and Science," who collected books in China prior to 1949, using the money which he earned working in the Commercial Press, Qiming Bookstore in Shanghai. In December 1980, he donated many of his books to the National Palace Museum in Taiwan, for which he was honored by Mr. Chiang Ching-kuo, eldest son of Nationalist leader Chiang Kai-shek, who personally composed the epitaph for Mr. Shen's tombstone. 來自芝加哥郭先生收藏,其岳父沈仲濤(1892 - 1980)為現代藏書家。號研易樓主人。浙江山陰(今紹興)人。早年在上海經商,後在商務印書館、啟明書局供職數年,後經商,以其盈利購書收藏。 1980年12月所藏書捐給台灣故宮博物院,為此,在他逝世後,蔣經國先生親筆題寫墓碑,以示表彰。著《華英易經》、《易卦與科學》等。
